Architecture Students work harder than all US college majors
According to a recent survey, US students enrolled in senior architecture courses, they spend more hours than other students.
Architecture majors have average 22.2 hours per week of study outside their classes, according to the University of Indiana National Student Survey Engagement (NSSE) as reported by The Tab.
That's 2.5 hours more than the chemical engineering students who came in second. Other engineering and science courses make up the majority of the 10 most difficult to work with.
The communications, sports and management courses all came down, with an extra 11 hours as the lowest figure.
Overall, average overtime hours were calculated at just under 15 hours - seven fewer than a typical architectural student.
The NSSE collected data from thousands of undergraduate and graduate students taking 86 different majors in the United States.
Among a long list of questions about their studies, they were asked how many extra hours they spent studying, reading, writing and doing homework or lab work outside of the scheduled hours.
The tab then averaged the results and compiled them in a ranking order.
Time spent working has already been linked to a high rate of depression and other related disorders among architectural students.
The results of a survey last year revealed that over a quarter of those studying the subject in the UK reported mental health problems caused or affected by their studies, with the workload among Main contributing factors.
As a result of these discoveries, the head of The Bartlett - one of the world's largest architectural schools - called for a review of architecture and accreditation teaching in the UK.
