Michelle Obama reported as keynote speaker for 2017 AIA conference
Former US First Lady Michelle Obama will deliver a keynote address at this year's AIA National Convention in Orlando, following a protest against the lack of speakers for the event.
Last week, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) announced the inclusion of Obama in the architecture conference program, which will be held at the Orange County Convention Center from April 27-29, 2017.
Several women have been added to the lineup for this year's event, as AIA has been criticized for gender balance.
In February, more than 50 architects and companies wrote a letter expressing "outrage" to the seven key notes confirmed at the time, only one was a woman.
Diller Scofidio + Renfro co-founder Elizabeth Diller, Perkins + Associate Eve Edelstein and architect Cheryl McAfee are among those who have now joined the writer and Harvard Professor Amy Cuddy on the list of speakers.
Obama served as the first woman during her husband's two terms, which ended earlier this year. During her tenure, she launched initiatives to combat childhood obesity and encourage young women to enter higher education.
"Over the past eight years, former White House Michelle Obama has worked tirelessly to defend a number of important initiatives to make our world a better place," said the AIA .
Obama is also a lawyer trained at Harvard and holds positions at the University of Chicago.
The themes of her AIA speech must still be disclosed, but she became famous for the passionate speeches given during the campaign for Hilary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.
Her speech will take place on the first day of the three-day conference, April 27, 2017, from 12:50 to 1:45 pm, Hall C.
The AIA recently expressed "deep concern" that US President Donald Trump's current travel restrictions are hurting the country's architecture and construction industries.
The organization faced a reaction after its election victory after promising to work with it to improve the country's infrastructure and apologized shortly thereafter.
